Sausalito Reflections

Contemporary Landscape Art Series

'...Sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away...'

The 'Sausalito Reflections' series explores life at the shifting boundary between land and water. Rooted in Sausalito, it draws its subjects from the floating homes, docks, and waterfronts of the San Francisco Bay Area. The paintings examine how reflection reorganizes architecture, revealing hidden geometric relationships and hinting at the lives lived there. Reflection does not dissolve order, it reveals another geometric order. Water extends, fractures, and recombines lines, windows, shadows, planes of color, and perspective with a near-mathematical logic. Even the ripples have a discernible structure: they break and redirect the mirrored forms, yet the image holds together. The compositions grow out of these reflections. In many works, the mirrored image carries as much visual weight as the architecture above it. The paintings are built from carefully simplified forms and clearly articulated chromatic planes. Precision stabilizes images whose spatial logic is inherently unstable. The architecture appears clean, idealized, and almost synthetic. It sometimes recalls architectural renderings or digitally modeled space, though each image is made entirely in paint. This simplification serves a conceptual purpose: removing visual noise reveals the geometry that architecture and reflection create together. The inhabitants are rarely seen directly, but the architecture records their presence. Decks, chairs, tables, boats, and other everyday objects around the floating homes carry traces of daily life. These details make the reflected architecture an indirect portrait of a particular way of dwelling at the water’s edge. Life between ebb and flood is both a physical condition and a philosophical one. Here, the paintings suggest, stability is continually negotiated. The homes are anchored, yet never entirely still.
