Artist Statement

​

Beauty is the medium, beauty is the message. I see the search for beauty as one of the most basic human impulses. We seek beauty as an end in itself, simply for the pleasure of looking at a flower, a landscape, or a luminous surface. We also rely on aesthetic cues as guides: the color and shape of a fruit, for example, can suggest ripeness and taste. Our sense of beauty is part of the perceptual system that helps us orient ourselves in the world. My lifelong engagement with art, biology, and medicine has made me attentive to the structures through which beauty becomes visible. The search for beauty is itself a form of research: beauty is both what I investigate and the medium through which I investigate the world.

What we experience as beautiful is itself conditional. Within my lifetime, a Cambrian explosion of image forms has transformed the relatively narrow analog field in which I grew up. Digital photography, video, the internet, social media, filters, AI-generated imagery, glitches, compression artifacts, and rapidly changing display technologies have produced an extraordinary diversity of visual forms and experiences in only a few decades. This transformation remains central to my work. I examine what a medium contributes to the message it carries: how it changes chromatic relationships, scale, and rhythm; how it alters our perception of time; and how it shapes memory and belief. I also ask how representations begin to shape the reality they seem to convey and how that relationship evolves over time. In my work, the evolution of media is also an evolution of aesthetic expectations: what we are prepared to recognize as beautiful.

My projects begin with a subject that exerts a persistent visual or conceptual pull: a landscape, an object, a living form, or an image circulating through contemporary media. I may observe it directly, photograph it myself, or work from found images, video stills, and digitally altered sources. I study the conditions that shape my perception of the subject: direct observation; the media through which it is represented; the ways images are cropped, filtered, reproduced, and circulated; and my own memory of the encounter. I translate this perceptual experience into a structural map of contours, chromatic fields, tonal intervals, and spatial relationships. Color by color and zone by zone, I reconstruct the image until a new visual order emerges. The painting embodies the visual logic of the conditions that shaped the subject’s appearance.

Each project develops as a series that investigates a different condition of appearance and a different way in which beauty becomes perceptible. Across these series, California light meets chromatic expectations formed by digital images, and reflection reorganizes architecture. Wind turns a flower into a succession of temporary forms. Movement and digital filtering cause the human figure to fragment, dissolve, and reappear. Deterioration, collective memory, and ideology alter the legibility of historical images. In paintings of the iridescent surfaces of insects, color appears as a function of light and viewpoint. The visual language follows the logic of the condition shaping the subject’s appearance; it does not merely depict its effects.

My experience as an art director in digital production sharpened my awareness of how visual language directs attention and shapes meaning. I treat style as an investigative tool, choosing a distinct artistic language in response to the subject and central idea of each project. Working across styles is itself a form of inquiry.

Since childhood, art and science, particularly biology and medicine, have been parallel sources of wonder and sustained inquiry. I approach painting as visual research, developing each art project as an experiment. The resulting paintings invite sustained attention through their color, rhythm, detail, and material presence. I seek to slow the act of looking so that transformations within the image can unfold gradually and questions about perception, memory, identity, and our sense of time can emerge.

I examine the contemporary proliferation of image forms from within the historical transition that produced it. Painting gives me a material means of engaging with this transformation through deconstruction and reconstruction: taking images apart and rebuilding them. Through each project, I ask how the conditions and media that make reality visible also reshape the reality we inhabit. Beauty is both a way of seeing and a reason to look.
